How to set up a payment plan with the Finanças

You can ask for a payment plan (plano de prestações) on the Portal das Finanças, in the Planos Prestacionais area, up to 15 days after the voluntary payment deadline. With 12 installments or fewer no guarantee is ever needed; debts of 5 000 € or less can go up to 36 installments with no guarantee.

Step by step

Sign in and open the Planos Prestacionais area, at sitfiscal.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/planosprestacionais/. Always enter through this start page: the area's inner addresses do not open directly.
In the menu, choose Simular/Registar Pedido (simulate/register a request).
In the list of bills, press SIMULAR on the one you want to pay in installments.
Enter the number of installments and press SIMULAR.
Check the installment, the interest and the total. If the plan needs a guarantee, attach the document as a PDF. You can save the simulation with EXPORTAR PDF.
Press REGISTAR PEDIDO to submit.
Follow the request under Consultar Planos: it shows Em análise (under review), then Deferido (approved) or Indeferido (rejected).

The regime is installment payment at the pre-enforcement stage (Decreto-Lei n.º 125/2021). The figures are revised every year.

What it costs in practice

Interest runs on each installment until the month it is paid, so a longer plan costs more. On a 12 000 € debt over 12 installments, interest comes to roughly 469 € in total. The exact figures are the ones in the Portal's own simulation, before you register the request.
